Location Platforms

For some reason, when I think of location platforms I want to sing the children's song "Old McDonald had a Farm" and maybe once i explain you'll see why...

So if you remember from my last blog, I talked about platforms, what they are, why you should get one, what they do, and why people have them. So how many of those platforms are Location based platforms? when I first heard about a location platform, I didn't really know what to think... I was thinking something along the lines that its an app that can locate certain items or people... not so.

Ever heard of people "checking in" on facebook? when people say, "OMG, just got to the movie theatre with my family can't wait to watch this new flick - Megaplex Theatre, Logan UT" that little blue part that is italicized are people "checking in" using a Location based Platfrom. some more examples of Location based platforms consist of Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, and Yelp. These I find are the most commonly used Location based platforms.

TomTom is the big brains behind this idea, TomTom has what is called a Location Based Service (LBS) they are the ones who make it possible for social media companies such as facebook to be able to use a the Location feature. if a social media platform has the ability to "check in" or let people where you currently are, you should assume that, that feature is being done by TomTom

I found all of this quite interesting, mostly because I could care less why someone would tell me where there are at an exact point... What do you want me to do? come and meet you there and take a picture with you? No. I personally think its dumb, and really unsafe, but a lot of people find it fun and interesting... What ever floats your boat.. now back to "Old McDonald" the lyrics if i remember correctly say, "... Here a Quack, there a Quack, everywhere a quack quack".... Now my version... "Here I am, there I am, everywhere I am, am!"

Now you see why I want to sing that song?

  1. I didn't know Tomtom was the host company for this. I never really considered how the service was actually being used other than through satellite location tracking via my internet/phone. It would make sense though that Tomtom would be the host company for this considering. Branching out and offering their services to other companies is super smart considering the ease of Google Maps. Smart Marketing by Tomtom.

  2. Your posts are so entertaining; nice voice you bring to them. I agree that I don't care to know where people are any given second of the day. I had no clue about TomTom, that's interesting. Thanks for sharing some knowledge.

  3. Totally agree with you about not caring where everybody is at any given time. The only thing I would like about it is that I could get deals from checking in some place. I'm all about getting free stuff, so checking in would be appealing if I got something for it.

  4. I agree with Kinzie, your post is very entertaining indeed. I agree with thouhg, I'm not a huge fan of checking in everywhere I go. I actually have only used the Facebook location thing, but only for places that are really cool, like South Korea. :)
